Identifying The Warning Signs

Signs of Tree Stress or Disease

Spotting problems early is key to effective tree health care management. Here are some common warning signs your tree might need help:

Leaf Issues

Leaves turning yellow, brown, or dropping too early
Spots, holes, or strange discoloration on leaves
Wilting, even if the soil seems moist enough
Leaves that are smaller than usual

Branch and Trunk Problems

Dead, broken, or dying branches
Cracks, cavities, or fungi growing on the trunk
Bark that feels unusual, is peeling, or looks different
Signs of pests or insect damage

Root Zone Concerns

Mushrooms or fungi popping up near the base
Soil that’s constantly waterlogged or way too dry
Damage from construction or compacted soil
Slow growth or a tree that looks stunted

Essential Support For Enhanced Tree Growth

Soil & Root Health Treatments

Healthy soil is the foundation of thriving trees. Here in the Greater Madison Area, many trees face challenges like compacted clay soils, poor drainage, and a lack of nutrients, making it hard for them to grow deep, healthy roots. That’s where our tree health care treatments come in! We create the ideal growing environment for your trees, giving them the strong foundation they need for long-term health and vitality. Our programs often complement other specialized services like cabling and bracing to keep trees structurally sound while they recover.

Our Soil Conditioning Services Include:

Soil Testing & Analysis: We’ll check your soil’s pH levels, nutrients, and structure to pinpoint exactly what’s holding your trees back.
Deep Root Fertilization: Our fertilization program delivers vital nutrients directly to the roots, helping your trees grow stronger and resist disease.
Soil Aeration: Using special tools, we loosen up compacted soil so roots can get the air and water they need to thrive.
Organic Matter Enhancement: By adding compost and organic materials, we improve the soil’s structure, water-holding ability, and microbial health.
Drainage Solutions: If water is pooling around your trees, we’ll suggest drainage fixes to prevent root rot and other water-related issues.

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Our experience with Stephenson was great and we will definitely use them again! It was easy to arrange for a bid (which was competitive) and they worked me into their schedule so that other planned work on our property could proceed without interruption. They returned phone calls promptly and took time to answer my questions. The foreman and crew did a fantastic job — they were polite, professional, and entertaining. My 80-year-old folks spent the afternoon watching them drop big limbs with surgical precision and the foreman gave the local pre-school children (who were out for a walk in the neighborhood) a great show as he was loading big sections into the truck. 5 stars for a job well done!

Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Amazing service start to finish -- I had a HUGE tree down in my yard from a recent storm that crossed several neighbors' lawns -- Andy came right out, gave us (neighbors) a very competitive bid and was able to schedule the work right away. The crew came on-time, worked very diligently throughout the day -- I had asked them to pay particular care of my perennials and shrubs and they REALLY did -- very minimal damage and they put everything back before they left, including yard decor!!! It was like they weren't even there which was amazing considering the size of the tree. REALLY nice, conscientious team -- SUPER impressed. Will use again and recommend to everyone I know!

Frequently Asked Questions About Tree Health Care

What are signs that my tree is unhealthy?

Common signs of tree stress include yellow or brown leaves, early leaf drop, dead branches, unusual bark growths, pests, or slow growth. Mushrooms near the base, cracks in the trunk, or unusually small leaves could also mean trouble. If you’re unsure, our certified arborists can help figure out if it’s just seasonal changes or something more serious through a professional tree health assessment.

Do you offer soil testing and treatment?

Yes! Soil analysis is a big part of our tree health care. We check for things like pH levels, missing nutrients, compacted soil, and drainage problems. Based on what we find, we can improve your soil with targeted soil conditioning treatments like deep root fertilization, adding organic matter, or aerating the soil to make it healthier for your trees.

Can pests or fungi damage my trees?

Definitely! Trees in Madison often deal with pests like emerald ash borer, oak wilt, Dutch elm disease, and scale insects, which can cause serious damage. The good news? Many of these issues can be prevented or treated if caught early. Our arborist consultations include checking for pests and diseases and offering treatments designed for your trees and property.

What’s involved in a plant health care program?

Our plant health programs are customized for your trees’ needs. They usually include regular check-ups, preventive care, pest control, and soil conditioning treatments, plus seasonal inspections for added support. We tailor everything to your tree species and property conditions to keep them healthy.

How often should trees be evaluated for health?

We suggest annual tree health assessments, but trees showing stress symptoms, newly planted ones, or species prone to diseases might need check-ups twice a year. Regular monitoring helps us catch and fix issues early, saving you time and money.
